About the book
Ezra has always wanted to follow in Pop Emu’s footsteps, and never quite believed he would get there. Josiah Alchin’s story is about mateship, culture, and what happens when friends turn up for each other. It has the shape of a bush tale with a sporting heart, and it lands somewhere Ezra did not see coming. Published as a Kindle edition, so every page had to survive being read on a phone in a dark bedroom as well as on a tablet.
The illustration
The palette is built from a sunlit paddock: hazy yellows, dusty olive greens and the one hot red of Ezra’s jersey, which keeps him findable on every page. The artwork is painted rather than drawn in flat vector, so brush texture stays visible in the foliage and through the feathers. Most of the comedy sits in Ezra’s face, so the character is built around expressions that still read at thumbnail size on a small screen.
