About the book
Alexandra travels to Antarctica and starts listening: to groaning glaciers, to shifting weather, to a continent that turns out to be full of voices. Wendi Pillars combines real climate science with an adventure, aimed at curious readers, budding scientists and anyone who has wondered whether one person can matter. At 108 pages it is the longest book on this list by a distance, and the only one for older readers, at eight to eighteen. Published in hardcover by Bridge Publisher.
The illustration
Antarctica is mostly white, which is a genuine problem for an illustrator and the central puzzle of this book. The artwork separates ice, sky, sea and cloud using temperature rather than hue, so the page stays readable without inventing colour that is not there. Alexandra wears the one warm tone in the landscape. A longer, information dense book also needs the illustration to leave deliberate room for text and diagrams, so compositions are built with the science in mind rather than around it.
