About the book
Korin O’Hara’s story follows a girl and her mum who meet a baby sea lion at the water’s edge and decide the friendly thing to do is offer her a tuna sandwich. It goes the way these things go. The book carries a real message about wild animals without ever turning into a lecture, and it lands on a happy ending. Thirty pages at a generous 8.5 by 11 inches, for readers of four to ten.
The illustration
The landscape format gives each scene a wide coastal stage, which suits a story about the distance between people and animals that should stay wild. The sea lion is drawn with real weight and real whiskers rather than as a cartoon, so the moment the situation turns still reads as an animal rather than a character misbehaving. Cool coastal greys and blues carry the setting, with the girl’s warm clothing keeping her easy to follow across every spread.
