About the book
Hadleigh Burch’s story is a gentle celebration of childhood, nature and imagination. Beneath a wide prairie sky, a young farm girl works out that kingdoms are not found in castles, but among wildflowers, muddy puddles, buzzing bees and patient animals. It is written for dreamers and explorers, and for anyone who suspects that a little dirt is part of the magic. Published in hardcover by Little Wild Press.
The illustration
The whole book is painted in watercolour, which suits a story about weather, soil and growing things far better than flat colour would. The palette runs through prairie greens, sun bleached golds and the muddied browns the title promises, so the girl’s boots read as earned rather than decorative. Compositions stay low and wide to keep the horizon in view, because the scale of the landscape is part of what the story is saying.
