Azlan Goes to Dreamland
A magical bedtime story

The first in the Adventures of Azlan series. Soft, dreamlike artwork in a palette that quietens as the story goes on, so the pages settle down at roughly the rate the reader does.

About the book
Azlan is a small boy who finds his way into Dreamland, a place of stars, clouds and a glowing fairy called Twinkle. Emma Everhart wrote it for toddlers and preschoolers who need convincing that sleep is somewhere worth going, which makes it a book with a job to do rather than just a story to tell. It opens the Adventures of Azlan series, so the character had to be designed to carry more titles than this one.
The illustration
A bedtime book has to lose energy on purpose. The colour starts bright and busy and drains toward deep blues and soft violet as Azlan gets further into Dreamland, so the last spreads are the quietest thing in the book. Twinkle provides the one warm light source in those pages, which gives a child something to look for while the rest of the picture calms down. The square 8.25 inch format keeps every spread balanced in small hands.
